Escape to beautiful Costa Rica and do it inexpensively! We have a cute little refurbished farm house for rent by the week or month. This would also be a comfortable house to rent long term if you are building locally or writing the great American novel. It is one large great room that includes a well equipped kitchen, a Queen sized bed, a dining and sitting area and a private bathroom with shower. The house has overhead fans and air conditioning. Duane lived comfortably in this house while the big house was under construction. To do so, he gutted it and updated it with ceramic tile floors, wood in the ceiling, and a new kitchen. There are lots of windows making the interior bright and cheerful. Big trees shade the house and there is a porch on three sides of the house to catch the cool breezes. Totally self contained, this charming house would be suitable for a couple wanting an economical vacation in the countryside. Two gentle horses are available for rides where you might see monkeys, armadillos, wild pigs, coadis, and a variety of birds including parrots and toucans.
This is a very safe rural area with access to language school, canopy and rainforest tours, volcanoes, butterfly farm, beaches and national parks. We are 30 minutes to a quiet little town that has a bank, grocery stores, bakery, restaurant, sodas, gas, video store, and internet. Up here in the mountains we have towns 10 minutes away with pulperias for staples, and colorful local bars. Every community has a church and a community hall where you can dance the cumbia, salsa, meringue, or disco. Rodeos, soccer games, and cabalgatas are frequent events.
The nearby beaches, (e.g. Coyote) 45 minutes away, are pristine with white sand, palm trees, and are noticeably lacking tourists. If you want action, you can go to Playa Samara, an hour away, for restaurants, shops, bars, disco, fishing, zip line etc. or to the northern or southern tourist beaches, (e.g. Tamarindo, Coco, Nosara, Tambor, Montezuma, Malpais etc.) which are a day trip away. We think it is an advantage to be able to spend the day at the beach and then return to the refreshing mountain air. We rarely have mosquitoes or flies, so sitting out, or eating out is delightful. If you are looking for a fast paced beach holiday with crowds and lots of action, you wouldn’t be happy here. If you want to get in touch with nature, decompress, and enjoy peace and quiet in a true paradise, come to our finca where we grow coffee.

We can provide whatever level of assistance you require: information only, transportation including a driver, daily housekeeping, laundry, meals, grocery shopping etc. Or you may choose a self catering, completely private, vacation knowing that if you need help, we are only up the hill in the big house.

A minimum of 1 week is required and we have reduced rates for multiple weeks. We will also consider long term rentals. Short term rates are as follows:

September, October, November, April, May, June $350.00 per week
July and August $450.00 per week
December, January, February, March $500.00 per week
December 23 – January 8 $600.00 per week
March 16 – March 23 $600.00 per week
Life in the mountains is simple, quiet, and cool. People are friendly, beer is cheap, and the scenery is spectacular! Contact us at 506-8302-2980 or 506-4000-2629 or E-mail us at duane@shiffert.com.

Guanacaste & the Nicoya Peninsula

This province is Costa Rica’s hottest and driest region. The rainy season starts later and ends earlier here and overall it’s more dependably sunny than other parts of the country. Beautiful beaches abound along the coastline and there is something for everyone whether you are seeking a pristine deserted beach or one that has luxury resorts. This is Costa Rica’s most coveted vacation region and the site of its greatest tourism development. It is also the “Wild West” of the country with cattle ranches and cowboys. This is a big country with big views and a big sky.

During the dry season, mid November to April, sunshine is always prevalent and the hillsides turn brown. If you are looking for a tropical paradise at this time you will be disappointed. It looks more like southern California at this time. If you visit during rainy season, May to mid November, the hillsides are a gorgeous verdant green and the sun usually shines all morning giving way to showers and fog in the afternoon…just in time for a siesta!
